When you design a typeface, how important is it for you to consider its lifetime?
I want it to be as good as I can possibly make it, true to the idea and somewhat relevant to the world I live in. What kind of lifetime it might have does not concern me. There is nothing I can do about it anyway.
What is it that you continue to pursue and explore in type design?
For me typeface means language and language means culture. I am interested how that language changes, adapts, permutes; how cultures influence each other. It is in flux, and typeface is a kind of silent witness to this.
Each of your fonts has its own unique character. What part or element of a font do you think can give people a strong sense of its character?
I don’t really think in these terms. It is just the way things turn out. I follow the trajectory of the work and see where it leads me. Sometimes it is more about the mood or atmosphere. Balancing all those different elements is an intuitive process.
