Looking back, it all started with
your blog in 2007, and now you continue to share photos and words on
Instagram. I imagine it takes quite a bit of effort. What is your intent
behind sharing and leaving a record of these?
I’m
just doing it because I want to
(laughs). But if I had to give a reason, I’d liken it to having a backup hard drive outside of
myself. I guess you could call it a diary or a time machine. I didn’t know all
that much about how the Internet worked back when I was doing my blog, but
something about how information was back then felt weak or ephemeral, you know?
So maybe I had a sense of
urgency, like I
had this panicked feeling that if I didn’t make a record of these things myself
at the time, it would be like they never
happened. On the contrary, I don’t feel that way as
much anymore. With platforms like Instagram where everyone is constantly
posting, I don’t have that same sense of urgency. Now, it feels more like I’m
expressing myself when something in my daily life moves me, rather than just
reporting on my activities. I think that sharing moments that really resonate
with me might connect with others more than straightforward promotion. It’s
really difficult to put what I’ve done into words, so while I can convey it
somewhat, I’m always looking for a closer way to express it. With these
records, even just as little points, maybe when I look back at things later
it’ll turn out that they all lined up into some kind of message. Everyone’s
timing and timeline is different, after all.
