Looking at your schedule, it’s really
packed with DJ gigs at all kinds of places.
Yeah, since I don’t just do clubs anymore.
There are other settings where I can DJ-type stuff as my lifework without
forcing it. Having there always be a variety of spaces where I can spin decent
sets is a great thing, and gives me more variations and ways of approaching
environments with sound. These spaces also function as places of expression,
each attracting their own unique kind of crowd and making a deep impression on
me with moods and music not found anywhere else. When I
feel comfortable in a space, I archive the sounds and feelings from
there as audio sources. Just like with field recordings, as long as I have
those audio sources, I can always tune into that place and recreate its
feeling. I feel DJs have another role as intermediaries who deliver the
feel-good vibes one place to another.
DJs are intermediaries?
Yeah. To me, playing music is one method in
this other role of connecting people, connecting sounds, connecting images,
connecting people with places. We also serve as a kind of hub in the space,
helping people communicate with each other through the presence of the DJ.
