I was very pleased with my work and the exhibition went well, but the paintings didn’t sell well. Okay, they did sell later down the line, but at the time the owner of the gallery called me over and grilled me, saying, “Hey, everyone wants black and white. Why’d you go with blue?” That got me upset and sent me spiraling, thinking “What, so I can’t do what I like?” and “What the hell is art anyway?”
But that was also right around when I’d gotten married and had a child, so financial stability was a must. I figured that if everyone loved black and white so much then I’d give it another shot, and once I got back to the drawing board, I found my interest in monochrome again.
