Susumu Mukai

What instruments are you able to best express yourself with?
I enjoy all instruments, but I started with the bass, so I think the instrument that best fits me is the bass. I also like drum machines and percussion instruments, but besides the bass, I play percussion and drums mostly during sessions.
You had been playing bass since you were a teenager, but why did you choose bass as your first instrument?
I found a broken bass and started jamming with a friend who also started playing the guitar.
What do you like about the bass?
I think the bass is a fun instrument to play. The position of the bassist in the band is also good. I mean you have a good view of the band. Basslines have both rhythm and melodies, and in some songs, you often remember simple bass lines rather than the chorus or vocals. I used to go to Dub’s sound system. At old-fashioned dub parties like Jah Shaka and Aba Shanti, I liked the feeling of the bass shaking my body emitted from a handmade sound system.
In illustrating, do you mainly use analog methods such as pencils and pens, but what about music production?
Because it is a style of recording by musical instruments, I think that it can be said that my music is analog. Although the equipment we use is both analog and digital. I believe in using anything that is available to us that is there.
