You really are one of a kind in how you’re
able to have painting be your life’s work but also insert realism rooted in
culture, how you can tuck a sense of giggle-inducing humor into something
serious.
If we’re going there,
then the thing that embodies my reality most is probably this
recurring visual feature I do for the magazine KAMINOGE.
The editor-in-chief and I
go way back. Well, this interview mag has somehow
managed to keep going for over 150 issues, and on a spread in each one is my column
called “Gokita Tomoo no Gagagazou”. I have total freedom there, no rules or
redos. That means I never run out of material and can have a blast doing it. Sometimes
it’s a bit too real, a little too honest, to the point where even I’m laughing
like “What the hell is this?” Like this Inoki (Antonio)
here is so bad that it’s crazy. I’m emotionally moved by how bad it is
(laughs). This is my only ongoing gig, and I submit something once a
month, so you can always see my latest work there.
