DJ Kensei was born in Tokyo. He began DJing in the mid-80s, visiting the UK in 1989 and then Australia in 1992, spinning while there. From the late 80s to the 90s, he was active in the core of the budding Japanese hip-hop scene, producing artists and making remix after remix. In 1995, he became a part of Kemuri Productions alongside the likes of DJ Krush, DJ Yas, and DJ Hide. That same year, he formed Indopepsychics with record collector Nik and engineer D.O.I., which later led to explorations of sonic electronica sounds. He then formed Final Drop in 2002 with GoRo the Vibration, Kaoru Inoue, and KND. He has since continued to be active in a wide variety of projects under different names, such as NUDEJAZZ at the invitation of organ player Toshihiko Kankawa in 2004, joining DJ Sagaraxx in 2007 to create the unit Coffee & Cigarettes Band (born from an event of the same name), OMA’N’SEI with jazz bassist Isao Suzuki in 2014, and in recent years, Kokenshow with KND and Shoichi Murakami. DJ Kensei is a recording artist who has found and pioneered a multitude of possibilities in sound with his incomparable sense, which he then ascends into music using elaborate techniques and audio control, and a DJ who creates freeform organic sound spaces unbound by existing categories.
