EACH STORY 2024
: A blissful outdoor listening festival

As summer comes to an end and we reluctantly prepare to say goodbye to all the fun we had, this is the time to wrap things up. Surrounded by the lush, beautiful nature and the cool, crisp air, we long to refresh ourselves from the exhaustion of summer while enjoying live, exquisite music to welcome the new season. “EACH STORY 2024,” an ideal outdoor festival that fulfills this almost wishful desire, will be held on October 5th and 6th.

This event is built around the concept of “Indulge in a stunning location with perfect sound design, featuring world-renowned artists with unique visions and carefully selected vendors from all over the country. The most comfortable outdoor listening festival in Japan, fully utilizing its natural environment.” Set against the backdrop of Gokou Ranch Auto Camp Park in the Nobeyama Highlands of Nagano, the venue is surrounded by a forest of white birch, with natural, pesticide-free grass underfoot. By day, attendees can take in views of the Yatsugatake foothills, and by night, gaze up at a sky filled with stars—truly a utopian setting. The festival features three stages: the Lake Stage, where the surface of the natural biotope shimmers in response to the music; the Hill Stage, where light and wind gently flow across the open hillside; and the newly added River Stage, nestled by a clear stream in the forest. These areas aren’t designed as traditional dance floors but rather as open, relaxing spaces where visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether seated or lying down, guests are free to experience the music in their own way.

The artist curation also sets this festival apart from the many other outdoor parties. Henning Schmiedt, a pianist from the former East Germany, has been pioneering genre-defying work, crossing the boundaries of jazz, classical, and world music from early on in his career. Thandi Ntuli, a leading South African jazz pianist and singer-songwriter, who released her latest work last year on the prestigious label International Anthem, will also be performing. Additionally, from Spain, the renowned guitarist Suso Saiz, known for his exceptional skill and sense in creating delicate, deep, and rich soundscapes, and a pioneer in ambient and new age music, will perform as well. Masaki Hara, who is active as a music writer, DJ, selector, and producer for the label rings, as well as the director of the LA-based online radio station dublab.jp (which will feature a special booth at the event), is part of the lineup too. MahiTo The People from the band GEZAN will perform an ambient set under the name Mahito the PeopleZZZ specifically for this event. On the DJ side, Shhhhh, known for blending ethnic music with the latest in electronic sounds to create freestyle grooves, will be spinning. K-LONE, featured in Issue 2 of our magazine, will also come to Japan from the UK along with his close collaborator Facta. A total of 20 artists and 4 DJs, both domestic and international, will gather to deliver an unparalleled musical experience resonating with this breathtaking location.

The sound engineering will be handled by Masahide Ando, who, after years of honing his skills at SUPER DELUXE, relocated to Nagano and now works as a freelance sound engineer. The speakers will feature Japan’s renowned Taguchi Speakers, and the sound cables will be provided by Acoustic Revive, a high-end audio accessories brand. This combination of expert craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology will faithfully reproduce the delicate tones and vocals of the artists, enhancing a clear and natural soundscape.

The camping area, where dogs are also welcome, is a vast free site without designated plots (and starting this year, tent rentals will be available for a hassle-free camping experience). The market will feature vendors with a strong sense of craftsmanship from across the country, including record shops and specialty stores. Alongside these, you can enjoy craft beers, including a limited-edition brew made with hops grown by the event organizers themselves, as well as carefully prepared foods and sweets that reflect the creators’ dedication to their craft.
