Izu Shirahama

Where Sound Becomes Experience

On September 27–28, a seaside resort in Shirahama turns into a space for borderless sounds and fleeting moments.

Dance, sit, lie back—good music beyond generations and borders, for all who love music.

This is the message that arrives from this year’s FFKT.
When invited by a phrase so simple yet so piercing, how could one resist? And the setting is none other than an exquisite location overlooking the sea of Shirahama, with vivid lawns and a pool. Faced with such a scene, it is impossible not to feel the pull to go.

Tracing its lineage back to TAICOCLUB, one of Japan’s pioneering outdoor festivals, FFKT began in Kodama no Mori in Nagano. Carrying forward its essentials—pristine sound systems and a comfortable environment—its inaugural edition in 2019 boldly introduced new experiments: bringing in contemporary artists for the artwork, reimagining the food court, and more. At a time when inviting artists from across Asia was still uncommon, FFKT placed them on its lineup. Equally unforgettable was the decision to invite Mount Kimbie—following their appearance at TAICOCLUB 2014, and at that perfect moment in the wake of their acclaimed Love What Survives and DJ-Kicks. Their vivid live set, with liquid-like sounds seeping through and coloring the space, remains deeply etched in my memory. And above all, the impression of FFKT’s intuitive and pure curation—unconcerned with conventional measures like fame or crowd-drawing power—has remained unchanged since its beginning.

After the pandemic, and about two years at Kodama no Mori, FFKT took a new step in 2023 with a spin-off event in Izu Shirahama. In today’s scene, where outdoor parties have multiplied and securing a suitable location is harder than ever, transforming a seaside resort hotel into the venue itself—realizing such an audacious idea—is already astonishing in its own right.

And this year, once again, artists from across boundaries gather to layer new resonances into this singular space. The ambient poet Gigi Masin will weave delicate, lyrical melodies that seep deep into each listener’s senses, while Powder, with her singular sonic palette, will transform minute particles of sound into a gentle weight, enveloping the floor in an organic groove. In addition, Brian Leeds will appear with a live set as Huerco S. and a DJ set as Loidis. Greg Foat, Fabiano do Nascimento, Milian Mori, Shinichi Atobe, and AKIRAM EN also join the lineup, promising encounters of sounds and sensibilities that transcend genre and geography to sketch new landscapes.

At Hotel Izukyu, the festival venue, accommodation is available (reservations close once capacity is reached), and one can soak in the hot springs while wrapped in the drifting sounds. Nearby lodging facilities and even car camping are also possible.

It’s rare to find a party blessed with conditions like these. Released from all stress and gently embraced by the sea breeze of Shirahama, one surrenders to soundscapes transforming from moment to moment. As the opening message reminds us: you can dance, you can lie down—it’s enough to simply take in the miraculous music as you please. That experience will surely exceed a fleeting sense of euphoria, quietly stirring something within your everyday life long after.
