MUNDUS PRESS
by
Emma & Charlotte Kohlmann

I would like to introduce MUNDUS PRESS, a project created in January this year by Emma Kohlmann, who was one of the artists who was interviewed for the first issue of this magazine, and her sister, graphic designer Charlotte Kohlmann.

Having roots in Etruscan and Latin, “MUNDUS” is defined as “womb and world”, “the universe and its inhabitants”, and “to keep time”. Emma and Charlotte not only publish their own works through this press, but they also include artists who generally feel resistant toward publication, and other individuals who would not feel likely to release a book of their own. Supporting various artists and writers, and bookmakers, they cooperate together to make books, art prints, shirts and others items for release.

Nineteen artists from the USA and Denmark participated in EX LIBRIS, the first book published by MUNDUS. Artwork is printed by risograph onto each page by Risolve Studios, a printing studio based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The book is designed so that each page can be neatly cut out of the book to be used as a bookplate for publications or journals. In recent years, bookplates have fallen out of fashion, but they certainly add another layer of love when added to your favorite books. Additionally, 20% of the proceeds from the sales of EX LIBRIS are donated to LIT, a literacy program for incarcerated youth in NYC.

Recently, a zine entitled Unearthing the Archives has been released. Designed by Charlotte, it is a collection of articles from the archives of The Montague Reporter, a small independent newspaper from Franklin County in Massachusetts, along with interviews with their caretakers. This zine is slated to continue in the future, and MUNDUS has also offered a tote-bag for sale to raise funds for this newspaper.

Up until now, Emma had published zines and collaborated in numerous ways on her own, but she had always imagined creating a comprehensive and cooperative printing press alongside Charlotte. And through MUNDUS PRESS, which has allowed this to come to fruition, one can share these women’s imagery and the warmth of their human connections via the physical form of printed materials, as well as their contents and context.

Above all, I would like for you to take a glimpse at the MUNDUS PRESS website.
