Stefano Pilati

Fashion designer from Milan, Italy. Started his career at age seventeen as an intern for Cerruti, and after building up experience in the industry he became an assistant for the menswear division at Giorgio Armani in 1993. In 1995, he took the position of fabric researcher at Prada. In 1998, he became the direct assistant designer to Miuccia Prada at MiuMiu, in charge of the ready-to-wear men’s and women’s collections. Appointed in 2000 as the women’s design director at Yves Saint Laurent, he then became the design director unifying all lines at the brand from 2002, and ultimately receiving the baton from Tom Ford, he was installed as the creative director in 2004, where he held the position for the following eight years. Leaving YSL in 2012, he worked as the head designer at Ermenegildo Zegna from the Fall/Winter collection of the same year, and after spending four years in the position, he retired from the luxury market. Around that time, he relocated to Berlin. Then, in November 2018, he presented his signature brand, Random Identities. Showing his debut collection at SSENSE’s main office, the collection was released for sale at the same time as the live presentation. Not restrained by trends or gender, he aims to contribute to the ongoing conversations surrounding identity, using his rich experience and superior consideration, he has brought into reality a way of making clothes which seeks out a balance between price, design, quality, technical properties and individuality.
