YOSHIROTTEN:
BEYOND EARTH
Color, light, natural phenomena, and things beyond the visible. YOSHIROTTEN has long drawn on these wide-ranging interests, expanding his practice across graphics, moving image, and space to give them form through his work. This time, his gaze turns toward space.

YOSHIROTTEN: BEYOND EARTH, his first large-scale solo exhibition in Tokyo in eight years, is now on view at TOKYO NODE in Toranomon Hills.
The idea began when he first visited the venue, 200 meters above ground. Standing alone in the empty gallery and looking out over the city through its windows, he suddenly lifted his eyes to the sky. In that moment, one thought came to him: space.
Through a friend, this led to a connection with JAXA and a dialogue with Hiroya Yamaguchi, a professor at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science who leads research using the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission XRISM.
YOSHIROTTEN had already created his own spectroscope, an instrument that separates light into its component wavelengths, and incorporated it into his work.

XRISM, as it happens, also explores celestial objects through spectroscopy, analyzing X-rays arriving from space. This unexpected point of connection opened up new possibilities, as YOSHIROTTEN encountered the latest astronomical observation data and research and began developing ideas for new works.
FUTURE NATURE turns its attention to the beauty found in nature, bringing what cannot be seen into new perceptual experiences. SUN began with one image created each day during the pandemic and has since evolved into large-scale installations. And RGB, rooted in the light and color of the screen, continues to run through the foundation of YOSHIROTTEN’s creative practice. At the exhibition, these three series, each developed in distinct ways over the years, are presented on a new scale. FUTURE NATURE, in particular, introduces new works created in collaboration with JAXA.
Puddle Cygnus X-1 transforms observational data from a black hole studied by XRISM into painting and moving image. In the installation Light Pulse, the gallery lights flicker in response to light from space detected by the International Space Station (ISS), filling the vast gallery with light that evokes communication with space. Other new works centered on space include Supernova, which traces the process of a supernova explosion, and Halo, which gives sculptural form to the orbits of stars.

Also on special display are IKAROS, a solar sail spacecraft that traveled through space propelled by the pressure of sunlight, and the control console used to guide OHSUMI, Japan’s first artificial satellite, into orbit in 1970. The Uchinoura Space Center, from which OHSUMI was launched, is located on the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, the same peninsula as YOSHIROTTEN’s hometown of Kanoya. There is something strangely fitting about the same control console now finding its way into this exhibition.

And the world of the exhibition extends beyond the gallery itself. On the 49th-floor SKY GARDEN & POOL, Pokémon Card Game & YOSHIROTTEN PARK, developed from a project celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, takes over the rooftop. In the evening, the same space transforms into BEYOND EARTH GARDEN, a video installation developed from YOSHIROTTEN’s painting The Earth. From December, luminous sculptures and other works will also appear throughout the public spaces of Toranomon Hills, extending the exhibition into the city.

Music is another essential part of the project. Alongside the release of a limited-edition LP selected by YOSHIROTTEN to reflect the world of the exhibition, MUSIC BAR UCHU, supervised by the artist, will appear at TOKYO NODE DINING on the same floor as the gallery. A radio program with YOSHIROTTEN as navigator is also planned to run for approximately three months.

Moving beyond any single field, YOSHIROTTEN follows whatever draws his attention toward whatever comes next. His interests continue to expand.
