Mille Plateaux
1999
The 20 tracks of the album are the result of a computer based, modulated synthesizer system. There is no difference between sound and composition anymore. One sound may represent the whole track. Tracks are not created by classic sequencer technology, but all movements, series of sounds, and orders of tones are the result of unorthodox connected Synthesizer modules (LFO’s, oscillators, filters, amplification). Developed sound-events, which are mostly chaotic and accidental, are brought into ‘form’ by special controllers. The result is minimal, often sketchy tracks, which are more constructed than improvised and are most often finished after the idea of the track is crystallized. Fragments of minimal structure are added slowly and carefully, sometimes taken out and then put back in after further thought. Other beat fragments seem lost and out-of-place, until low frequency clicks are locked in. Even if the albumis contemporary electronic music, it is still inspired by the idea of new and experimental pop music.

CURVE takes a different approach that accomplishes the sensibilities of minimalist pop music. The unessentialist sounds of CLICKS & CUTS that have dominated Mille Plateaux are an intergral part of CURVE, however the evolution of this new genre continiues with the eloquent construction of majestic complexities. BRETSCHNEIDER goes beyond the plug-in or plug research electronics. He redefins the CLICKS & CUTS genre by rendering the parameters playable, reentering the musical domain with unprecedented ease. BRETSCHNEIDER discovers the complexity of the virtual: microtonality, clicks, complex rhythm textures, melodic fragments. A perfect musical body. BRETSCHNEIDER succeeds again in progressing the new age of laptop production and delivers a stunning exhibition of sound.

Utilizing both artists keen ears for carefully crafted sounds, BALANCE blends the clean sine wave / white noise of BRETSCHNEIDER with the defined grit of DEUPREE’s granular synthesis. Realized entirely on Nord Modular synthesizers, BRETSCHNEIDER and DEUPREE exchanged patch files through email and began constructing foundation loops. BRETSCHNEIDER then created initial mixes of 9 songs and then sent them to DEUPREE who remixed and re-processed them. This digital exchange allowed for them to work using their own methods and aesthetic while combining the similarities of each others interests. The result is a looping and churning rhythmic work that is both synthetic, warm, dubby and tonally challenging. Thus BALANCE creates an engaging balance between the 2 artists aesthetics.
BALANCE also includes Quicktime visuals for the track AUTODRIVE.
