The thing that was more of a surprise for me was becoming interested in systems based approaches to composing through the use of modular synths and Max/MSP. This sort of snuck up on me and was a pretty major break from how had been working, and I mean this more from a conceptual point of view than specifically technical. Once I had starting working with analog and digital synthesizing systems that method of creating complex and generative control paths started to inform modes of composing that might not use synthesis at all—it being more the process than any specific relationship to a generative system.
In my recent piece, Vocal Trio (2024, Blume Editions), this is really at play. That is a work for three voices, no processing and no electronic synths, but the conceptual bases for it is very much informed by all the work I had been doing with synthesizing electronic sounds. This piece is also an extension of how language can act as a control source.
