What’s the first thing you start with
when making a new album?
Most of the time,
the first thing is kind of like music rehabilitation: I just play around with
my instruments and gear without really thinking about the album. As I do that I’ll start finding stuff, like “Hey,
maybe we can use this,” and then all that builds up in a corner of my mind.
So you’re starting from zero?
I’d love for it to be that way every
time, but it’s not like I can reach an absolute blank
state or become a completely new person. So pretty often I’ll find myself with familiar chord progressions, using similar
tones, and applying melodies like I usually do.
Do you regularly jam with the other members of the
band?
Yeah. We used to get
together once or twice a week, but since the pandemic it’s become a lot less frequent. Now
we hit the studio maybe twice a month.
