We first came across Haku. through your studio session video of the
MONO NO AWARE cover Kamukamo-Shikamo-Nidomokamo!. From there, we started
listening to your other songs and got completely hooked. Did you start out
playing original songs from the very beginning? Did you start out playing
original songs from the very beginning?
So
when we debuted at that contest I mentioned earlier, one of our songs was a
cover, and the other was an original. But it’s been all our own
material since.
And you write everything?
Yeah.
Oh, but I have been working in tandem with our producer Kei Kawano starting
with the album Bokurajanakyadameninatte. I’ll compose
the initial lyrics and music, then Kawano-san and I shape it together, and
after that we all go into the studio... that’s pretty
much how the process goes.
Has adding a producer to the mix brought any changes to your
songwriting?
Oh
yeah, a ton! The level of excitement when we complete a song has also changed.
Up to now, it was just me drawing the line myself, so everything I made was
limited to what we could perform live. But once I linked up with Kawano-san, he
was like, “It’s okay to reach for more.” Because doing that creates resolve, like,
“Someday we’re gonna do that live!” So we’ve done stuff like throw in a four-person chorus—or wait, no,
actually more than four. We have some songs with synthesizer now, too, so I
feel like Kawano-san is someone who helps us bring to life that playfulness and
those things we’ve always wanted to try.
