MEI remember in 2016,
Ryan met his now wife Beatrice who was living in France and he
moved there to be with her. I remember thinking, and probably saying to Ryan,
that this was it and that the studio would fold. He disagreed and we agreed to
keep it going via Slack which had just been introduced to us. I think for a thousand other people this setup wouldn’t have worked, but weirdly, it
made us better. We still don’t share a physical space and I think it has through some form of
alchemy made us work better together. When Ryan moved, at almost the same time a large three story former engine house
became available within the grounds of
Islington Mill so I moved in with ten
friends. It’s a beautiful place to come to make work every day:
huge windows look out onto Manchester and it’s nice to share a studio with people you can have a beer with at the
end of the day. It’s a large space so when we have a
big project, Ryan will visit and we’ll be physically working next to
each other which is fun.
