I would like to ask you about Vector Hack Festival, which you have conceived and initiated together with Ivan Marušić Klif. Please tell us about the genesis and intent of this festival, which focuses on audiovisual works, and what criteria you use to select the artists you invite.
While I am honored that Klif invited me to join him at the start of the Vector Hack project, I would like to point out the lion’s share of the initiative and the labor is his. In 2019, we were both working on audio frequency implementations of the Rutt/Etra video synthesizer.

Rutt-Etra Video Synthesizer
The Rutt-Etra video synthesizer was co-invented by Steve Rutt & Bill Etra. It essentially was an analog computer for video raster manipulation.

His became a project built in Max/Jitter called REWereHere and mine became part of the Vector Synthesis library for Pure Data.

I plan to release a raster processing software REWEREHERE that uses computers soundcard as DAC to drive an analog oscilloscope or XYZ display. Software will be free and run on OSX and Windows (it is a MaxMSP patch, so no Linux).

SKETCHES for VECTOR SYNTHESIS

The VECTOR SYNTHESIS project is an audiovisual, computational art project using entirely analog synthesis and vector graphics display techniques to investigate the direct relationship between sound+image. Driven by the waveforms of an analog synthesizer, the vertical and horizontal movements of a single beam of light trace shapes, points and curves with infinite resolution, opening a hypnotic window into the process by which the performed sound is created. Informed by the discourse of media archaeology, my own personal interest in analog vector graphics isn’t merely retro-for-retro’s-sake. Rather, it is an exploration of a once-current and now discarded technology linked with specific utopias and dystopias from another time.
