I get this strong sense of something pure, something unaffected, in your
lyrics and expressions. But at the same time, I also pick up on a desire to
reach as broad an audience as possible. Do you ever find yourself wavering
between the two?
Definitely.
That comes through strongest in our song The
Universe of My mind. To me, that’s the one I think people will
have the hardest time understanding. Even when I was writing it, I kept going
back and forth between thinking, “This might be way too metaphorical,” and
feeling, “But no, this really is what’s inside my
head.” Even during recording, Kawano-san was like, “I have no idea what you’re talking about here” (laughs). But he didn’t mean it in a bad way—he said that’s
actually what made the song interesting. And I was like, “Right?!” Still, I did
worry a little that people wouldn’t get it once it came
out. But lately I’ve started to feel like, even if what
I’m saying is a bit abstract, it’ll reach people once I sing it—that I can sing my way into
understanding with them.
