Your powers of expression seem to be growing.
I
guess there are lots of songs that don’t feel “finished” even after they’re recorded, and they only reach their final form through singing
them live. In that sense, I think maybe I’ve gotten
better at expressing myself, and even when I have an idea of how I want to sing
a song while I’m writing it, once I actually get in
front of the mic—recording or on stage—there are times when I feel like maybe I’ve overdone it. So a lot of my songs end up evolving as I keep
performing them.
That’s an interesting idea, that songs can get closer to completion after
they’re out in the world.
It
really is. But I realized how true that was when I sang Soreshikaienai for the first time in front of an audience at Haku.s Day. I felt like no matter
how I sang it, it would’ve been right—that anything would work—and that made me genuinely
happy about the song.
