You
curated Cut That Out: Contemporary Collage within Graphic Design (published in 2016), which features on the collage work of 50 designers and studios. You
have created many collage works as well. What have you recognized or discovered
as a fellow creator through working on this book?
DRFor me,
working on this book cemented the idea that collage isn’t just the traditionally cut and
paste technique we all know it for, collage can be combining type and image,
paint and photography, sculpture and paper. That
was sort of the whole message behind
Cut That Out—
to break down the notion of collage just being cut and paste paper collages.
MEIt was a fascinating
process; I think it really made us question what collage is
and what it could be through the prism of design. Essentially, to me, collage
is really anything put next to something else where the context changes. As
soon as you start viewing a lot of design work in this way,
you realise how prevalent and important collage is within design.
