What
is the appeal of collage as expression? What is it about collage that keeps you
interested in it?
MEIt feels a little
unknown, I think that’s what
gets me about it. You start making something and then you search for something
to add to it. You have no idea where this search will take you,
and then when you find something that works there always seems to be something
that elevates it to a different level. A couple of years ago I travelled solo
to Denmark as we had some work in an exhibition. When I was there, I
had an afternoon to myself and as it was a pretty small town, I
went to a charity shop and bought a few interesting Danish photography books,
some scissors and glue from a craft shop, and then I then spent the afternoon using my hotel room as a
make-shift studio making collage. It’s an interesting practice for me personally as it feels as much like
a job as it feels like something I do to have fun.
Starting with graphics and collage, you use all kinds of
techniques including painting, photography, and illustration. Do the two of you
have your own specialties and roles?
DRYeah,
we do sort of have our own specialties and naturally slip into them.
As mentioned about my background, I really wanted to be fine art painter before I
focused on graphic design, so I try to interject the techniques behind
painting into my work through using paint as a medium sometimes in my collage
work. Or if I can live out my childhood fantasy to be a
cartoonist as I have recently with the work for Top Cuvee then I will jump at
that opportunity.
