UNDERCOVER’s 2022 SS men’s collection features some of your band’s artwork.
How did this collaboration come about?
Apparently Jun
Takahashi, the designer of the brand, likes our artwork. He reached out to me
out of the blue about doing something together, but to be honest, at the time I
wasn’t too sure. I’m not that interested in fashion, so I had no clue about UNDERCOVER
as a brand.
You don’t like fashion?
I guess it’s more that I’m just not interested in fashion, like to the point where I don’t have any feelings of like or dislike toward it. I’d always considered that kind of high fashion to part of a world
completely different world than mine, so the thought of doing something with
people from there had never entered my mind. When I asked a friend for some
advice about the offer, I remember they spooked me, saying stuff like, “The
fashion industry has a super quick turnaround, so even if you do this
collaboration, you’re not only going to get used and
forgotten in the blink of an eye, maybe even leaving your band with only this
stink of being kind of shallow” (laughs). But, when I actually met with
Takahashi-san and asked him about the type of clothes he wanted to make, the
seeds of curiosity about seeing his ideas take form were planted, and
eventually my desire to see the finished product overrode my unease. I was
really pleased when I saw and tried on the results.
