Michael Raymond Russell / Drumetrics (2/2)

Drumetrics vinyls are special in their form and specifications, including the great artwork, and are like art pieces. Do you consider a vinyl to be more than just a medium for sound?
Absolutely—everything should be a work of art. With today’s world of instant digital gratification it makes limited analog products more valuable to have, as opposed to mass production’s supply and demand. It also makes people feel special to have limited art or things that not everyone has. And, at the end of the day, it may go up in value which benefits the owners. Digital sound media is like a billboard you see while you’re driving on the road: you get a lot of traffic witnessing you and routing them to your limited physical product. So, they are both essential.

Back to your personal story, I read in an article a few years ago that you live in San Diego, are you still based in the city and do you have a private studio there?
Yes indeed, I was born and raised in the (Sun) Diego—as well as most of our collective. My private studio is here as well.
I actually studied in San Diego for a short time a long time ago. It is a very wonderful place with a great climate, but it is not a cultural center. Why did you choose San Diego as your base?
Ha! Sorry, I have to disagree with you on the non-cultural center. We have so much diversity of cultures from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and obviously the best Mexican food in the USA and probably the second largest Filipino population LOL. The list goes on… If you come to mid-San Diego near SDSU (San Diego State University) where I reside, you will witness the culture in more inland counties. If you’re close to the coast and beaches, you’re gonna witness military family, surfers, and upper class residents. Also keep in mind that since San Diego is a huge military town, we get everyone from throughout the US residing here temporarily.
