There are times when melodies or phrase are what hook us when we hear certain songs, but in most cases we have a vague image of the song in its entirety. Nevertheless, there are times where a glance at the lyrics of a familiar song causes details to come bubbling up to fill out this hazy image, and this is exactly how it was with the beginning of my love for Rope by Ogre You Asshole. The image that springs forth from the music is that of a space with deep moments of “clarity” within the intervals of a groove that meanders along at a relaxed pace. When the lyrics are added to the mix, it makes the margins and shadows all the more obvious, so while the mood may be loose and open to any number of interpretations, this is contrasted by the emergence of an unfathomable, mysterious topography, full of hints that there may actually be something sharp lurking just out of sight. While the soundscape naturally varies tune to tune, it also feels entirely plausible that each of them may be connected within a single world, with the impression that this world has slowly transformed from album to album. Manabu Deto’s artwork is exactly like a frontispiece inviting one into this soundscape arranged with unique nuances found nowhere else. Here we hope to take a look at the depths of the world woven by Ogre You Asshole.
