After talking with Takahiro Miyashita, his words lingered with me for some time, and I found myself pondering the true meaning behind them. Though my insight into the realm of fashion does not run that deep, the name Takahiro Miyashita was one that I became familiar with shortly after the launch of NUMBER (N)INE to the point that I read several of the relatively few interviews he did over the years. However, something about the perspective Miyashita presented here in our own first interview with him was fundamentally different than I had imagined. Oddly enough though, my takeaway wasn’t mere surprise but a sensation more akin to “realization”. The objects of the aspirations Miyashita harbors, the questions that well up within him, his march to reach a certain realm, agonizing though it may be, and a powerful desire for intrinsic progress—I felt a common thread running through all of these things woven together through this lone fashion designer, and perhaps by touching upon this my understanding of him to grow that much deeper. While I by no means have any proper basis for judging fashion, I can say that, after this interview, I’ll be looking at any collection I see in a different light, no matter the designer.
