We first knew of Derek Holzer as a media archaeologist. It was because of our personal interest in video synthesizers that lead us to discovering captivating graphics online which happened to be examples of scan processing schematics appearing in his book. In addition to such research, his activities range from the creation of experimental electronic instruments, lectures, as well as live performances, but the axis to it all is his interest in the direct relationship of sound and image, and furthermore, his exceptional fascination with sound itself is the origin of his creation.

It’s not easy to catch up with Holzer’s knowledge which includes the societal background and intentions of creators, beyond the configurations of their original devices made over half a century ago. However, especially now that music and images can be easily created by anyone using software or AI without ever being aware of the programs running behind the scenes, by coming in contact with his story and ideas, there is something to be gained even if you just intuitively enjoy the sounds and shapes that come into being from his deep consideration.
