Frank Bretschneider is a musician, composer and video artist residing in Berlin. His work is known for its precise sound placement, complex interwoven rhythm structures, and its minimal and flowing approach. These nuances and details are also reflected in his visuals as exquisite transformations of music into visual phenomena.
After studying fine arts, he began experimenting with tape machines, synthesizers, and modified guitars in 1984, as well as exploring the possibilities of exchange between visual art and music by various means. By 1986 he founded the band AG Geige, and released three albums by the time band dissolved in 1993. In 1995, Bretschneider along with one of the members of AG Geige, Olaf Bender, established the record label Rastermusic, which later merged with noton in 1999 to form raster-noton.
Many of his early solo albums were released under the name “Komet”, and his first solo release under his real name was SAAT in 1996. His second album Curve in 2001 was the catalyst for his international acclaim. Since then, he has released albums GOLD (2003), RHYTHM (2007), KIPPSCHWINGUNGEN(2012), SUPER.TRIGGER (2013), SINN+FORM (2015), and SWEET WATER POOLS (2019) in addition to releases on various labels outside of raster-notion including Mille Plateaux and Longform Editions. In 2010, he also presented the audio-visual work EXP.
