Mana Morimoto

Profile

Mana Morimoto was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1987. She grew up watching music TV channels like MTV from a young age. Mana later traveled to Oregon in America as an exchange student while enrolled at a strict private girls’ school. Experiencing reverse culture shock upon her return to Japan, she returned to Portland, Oregon after graduating. There she spent her days immersed in music, mainly indie rock. After returning to Japan once more and falling into the throes of reverse culture shock yet again, she suddenly started doing embroidery. Morimoto then moved to Tokyo, where her tastes gradually drifted toward electronic music as she found that indie rock did not suit the scenery there. She enjoyed a life filled with nights out and music festivals until she settled down after giving birth. Later, she slowed down even further due to LongCovid which left her in rough shape. Although she is not fully recovered, she is back to make art once again.

Morimoto held her first solo exhibition “mnmrmt.tumblr.com” at the midori.so gallery in 2014. She then took part in shows such as Installation at Rising Sun Rock Festival (2015) and Kicks Museum curated by Ollie (2016) before showing her latest project “The Hypnochromatic Series” at Breakfast Club in March of this year. Her major commission works include New Balance Grey Day event (2018), Adidas x All Blacks (2019), Site specific Installation for Cross Office Shibuya (2020), and Blue Giant x Brooks Brothers (2020). Ever since the beginning, Morimoto has used thread to depict gazes, sounds, and other things that cannot be seen but exist all the same.
