Martine Syms

Profile

Martine Syms is an artist who has earned wide recognition for a practice that combines conceptual grit, humor, and social commentary. She has shown extensively including exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Art Institute of Chicago, LACMA, and ICA London, among many others. She has also done commissioned work for brands such as Prada, Nike, Celine, Kenzo, Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang, and YEEZY/Kanye West, among others. She is a recipient of the United States Artists fellowship, the Tiffany Foundation award, and the Future Fields Art Prize. She is the author of Implications and Distinctions: Format, Content and Context in Contemporary Race Film (2011). She is a faculty member in the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts.
