Issue 6
Afterwords
This marks our sixth issue since launching in February 2021. At first we received feedback saying readers “didn’t know how to approach” our magazine and found it “difficult to view”, which were perhaps natural reactions. Nigh Magazineis after all made with the mindset of it being a traditional print publication, which is why each issue starts with a cover followed by a table of contents and then the featured articles. There is even an afterword at the end by the editor much like the one you’re reading now. For those used to convenience-focused websites that list all their content on the top page, all of this must seem quite confusing or convoluted, but the truth it’s a very simple layout. Also, much like with its analogue counterparts, each issue of Nigh Magazinehas a theme and is only released once all its content is complete, meaning that updates are quite infrequent and there’s no need to check back every day. On the flip side, each issue retains its freshness no matter when one drops by, or how much time has passed since it was read last.
This time around we spoke with Thomas Subreville of Ill-Studio, who is near the same age as me. One of the things that really had me nodding in agreement was his statement that we are the last generation that grew up in a time without the Internet, but at the same time we also adapted to the era after its spread, putting us in the rare position of knowing the good and bad points of both worlds from firsthand experience. Thomas also said something similar, but magazines were my main point of contact for my favorite subcultures and visuals. Immersing myself in their pages crafted from assembled ideas and stories filled my mind with atmosphere and scents and even textures that in turn provided me with great inspiration and motivation to pursue my lines of thought with heightened interest. I found myself unable to discard these magazines from across the globe, which now continue line the shelves of my home to this day. Some of them are likely from more than 20 years ago, and I still enjoy taking them out to flip through from time to time. Getting a sense of the era from publications of years past can still lead to fresh discoveries. I have a deep fondness for such magazines, as well as a great interest in them as a culture.
Sadly though, we rarely buy magazines these days. There are many reasons for this, but we still feel compelled to make one again from a viewpoint in line with the present. We want to try and share something akin to our own past experiences with magazines, as well as a new sense of the media only possible online. Nigh Magazine is the culmination of these desires. It’s a free space where we can express through motion graphics, videos, and music, and just dig as deep as we want. That said, in a today where efficient, superficial intake of the latest info has become the norm, there probably aren’t many willing to sit down and read such long interviews. Nevertheless, we’re sure there are at least a few souls out there who find they share our sensibilities and will be drawn by hints of things they won’t find anywhere else. That’s how it has always been with magazines, after all.
The theme of this issue is “Build the Ambience”. Just like the four teams of creators featured within, we too wish to create a magazine that fully immerses the reader in its unique headspace. And we will continue to do so in good faith while adhering to our own ideals and accepting the flow of the moment without putting on airs or currying favor from others.
