Manabu Deto was born in Toyoma Prefecture and lives in Nagano. He is the vocalist/guitarist of Ogre You Asshole (OYA), a pioneering live band of the modern era that has won many fans with their mellow psychedelia. After perfecting a guitar sound in synch with the US indie style in the 2000s, OYA established their reputation with a trifecta of You Ishihara-produced conceptual albums, homely, 100 Years Passed (100-nengo), and Papercraft, that introduced strains of psychedelic rock and krautrock. The band’s first self-produced release, Everythingsomethingnothing (Handle wo hanasu mae ni) in 2016, successfully brought their unique sound to a wider audience to great acclaim. OYA was invited to do an 18-stop tour in the US and Canada in 2010 before appearing on the White Stage at Fuji Rock Festival in 2014 and then doing a solo show at the Hibiya Open Air Concert Hall in 2018. This summer will see them make a return to Fuji Rock.
In addition to composing songs for OYA with fellow guitarist Kei Mabuchi, Deto also writes all the lyrics. He has also crafted the album art for all OYA’s releases since 100 Years Passed and has even tried his hand at making several music videos as of late, showing glimpses that he has what it takes to utilize his creativity and art school background to the fullest in translating the band’s soundscape into visual form.
