The open-air party
“Bonna Pot”
returns after two years,
taking place at Auto Camp Ginga in Nishi-Izu.

The open-air party “Bonna Pot” will be held over two consecutive nights from Friday, November 8th to Sunday, November 10th, at Ginga Auto Campground in Nishi-Izu.

On a November night in 2022, I attended “Bonna Pot” for the first time, drawn by the prospect of Powder’s five-hour long set. The event took place at Chidori Park in Kawasaki, a familiar venue I had visited several times for other parties. However, from the moment I stepped through the entrance, it felt like stepping into a completely different world. As I walked down the path to the dance floor, my initial feeling of “there’s something different about this party” turned into certainty. It was clear that the event wasn’t focused on attracting large crowds, but rather creating a space where the attendees, those who resonated with the vibe, were deeply valued. The atmosphere was focused on something more essential, creating a sense of comfort and a laid-back, free feeling. The lighting was minimal, dim enough that unnecessary elements disappeared from view, giving the place a dreamlike quality. The dance floor, surrounded by meticulously curated Taguchi speakers, enveloped you in a soundscape filled with rich, high-quality sound that felt both raw and refined. As I immersed myself in the story Powder was weaving with sound, dancing as if floating, I found myself thinking over and over, “This is such a great party.” That special ambiance stayed with me, and I haven’t been able to forget it.

“Bonna Pot” is making its return after two years, and for the first time in three years, it will once again be held at the campground in Nishi-Izu. This time, the dance floor will be set up in the most beautiful part of the forest, an open grassy area under the sky, which couldn’t be used during the previous event. “The sound system has been fine-tuned down to the smallest detail, surpassing what was achieved before. Over the past two years, we’ve continually tested and upgraded to create a one-of-a-kind setup using cutting-edge, high-end equipment combined with custom-made devices. The powerful, smooth, and delicate low-end texture, along with the three-dimensionality and expressiveness that make the sound almost visible, brings the intricate intentions of the music’s creators to life. We’re aiming for a sound that blends melting euphoria with a sense of purification, reaching deep into the senses.” Just reading these words makes my heart race, imagining the kind of soundscape that awaits. Surely, everyone would want to experience such ‘melting euphoria.’

The lineup includes the experimental duo CS + Kreme from Melbourne, O/Y from Berlin, who will perform a modular live set in his first visit to Japan, Thomash from São Paulo’s art collective VOODOOHOP, Sunju Hargun, who has gained popularity in Japan’s techno scene with standout performances at “rural” and “Paramount,” and Scott Zacharias, who serves as the closing resident for the Outer Space Room at Detroit’s legendary “No Way Back” party. A total of seven international artists will participate. Additionally, domestic acts include Toshio “BING” Kajiwara, who has played at David Mancuso’s THE LOFT, and ∈Y∋ from Boredoms, among others, with a total of 16 acts performing on the state-of-the-art sound system mentioned earlier. Some artists are visiting Japan for the first time, so there may be names unfamiliar to you. However, the lineup consists solely of artists whose live performances left such a strong impression on the organizers that they were eager to collaborate with them at “Bonna Pot.” You can trust that this will be an opportunity to enjoy an extraordinary musical experience.

Just like the 2022 edition, where the ideal was ‘to maintain order through the thoughtful consideration of everyone present, within the minimal rules set for the event,’ participants are once again free to bring in artistic works and decorations, and are welcome to display or sell them at the venue. Beyond the artist curation that is unaffected by fame, the unique floor design, and their relentless pursuit of sound, you can sense their vision of what an ideal party should be in these elements as well.

What do we seek from an outdoor party? The joy of gathering with fellow music lovers, the sense of freedom to dance without inhibition, and the fulfillment of being immersed in music amidst nature... While the reasons may vary for each individual, not just any party will do. It’s essential to understand what kind of party the organizers aim to create, who they want to resonate with, and what kind of musical space they aspire to build together. The kind of party that aligns with those ideals is a must, and for me, “Bonna Pot” is one of those outdoor parties. If you feel drawn to it, don’t hesitate—come experience “Bonna Pot”!
